Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Kolze Lines

• The "Chicago" Kolze's - The three sons of Cord Heinrich Kolze and Anna Maria Fedderke immigrated to the Chicago area in the 1840's from Nienhagen, Amt Neustadt am Rübenberge, Hannover (now Gilten, Heidekreis, Lower Saxony, Germany). Dietrich, the youngest, came in 1846 and settled in the city of Chicago where he was a cabinet maker, married and raised a family. Johann Heinrich (or Henry), the middle son, arrived with his wife Katharina Maria (Haverbeck) and five children in 1847, and settled in Leyden Township, near the current town of Schiller Park, Illinois, where he became a farmer. Frederick, the oldest, arrived in 1849 with his wife Louisa Dorothea (Koch) and seven children. They also settled in Leyden Township and farmed. Virtually all the Kolze's in the greater Chicago area through 1940 descended from one of these three brothers.

• The "Iowa" Koltze's - Heinrich Koltze (1819-1908) and his family came to the United States from Frankenfeld in the Hannover region of Germany in 1848. At first they settled in Addison Township, DuPage County, Illinois, near Leyden Township where Friederich and Johann Heinrich’s families of the “Chicago Kolze’s” lived. Later Heinrich Koltze and his family moved to Jackson County, Iowa, and later Crawford County, Iowa. This family appears to be distantly related to the “Chicago Kolze’s”, probably at least two or three generations back in Germany.

• The "New York" Kolze's - The family of Karl Kolze and Caroline (Kessler) Kolze, including at least four of their children, Frederick Kolze (1847-1934), Bertha Kolze, Hermann F Kolze (1856-1918), and Gustav Kolze immigrated from Germany to the New York City area in the late 1860s or early1870’s. At this time it is not known where they came from in Germany, if they came together or separately or if Karl came to New York.

• The "Northwest" Kolze's - Peter Andrew Kolze and his family immigrated to Montana and later the state of Washington from Copenhagen, Denmark in 1915.

• There are many other Kolze lines around the world, in Germany, Denmark, UK, Australia and Canada. Some of the Germans share common ancestors with the "Iowa Koltze's". One of the purposes of this Kolze name study is to see if a link can be found between the various Kolze/Koltze lines.

Task List

As of early 2019 there were very few Kolze's on wikitree, so I (Paige Kolze) have entered the information I have. If other people have additional information it would be great if they add it too. Any new profiles or improvements to existing profiles are welcome.

In the coming months I plan to work on the following (and will update status along the way):

• Add copies of documents such as birth, marriage & death certificates, wills, church records, etc.

• Improve biographies and use embedded sources with references

• Review information in old German church books to add additional ancestors of the US immigrant Kolze/Koltze families and find connections between the various lines

Further Research

• There are conflicting places of death for Friedrich/Frederick Kolze (1802-1872)
  • His place of death is listed as town of Leyden, Cook County, Illinois in Album of Genealogy and Biography Cook County, Illinois published in 1900 by the LaSalle Book Company. This seems likely, given that this is where he lived, and he was buried in St John's Cemetery nearby.
  • Many online family trees list his place of death as "Fu, St John, Virgin Islands (US), United States", which could have been a mixup with the name of the cemetery. Since Ancestry will suggest locations based on what the user starts to type, this could have started as a simple mistake that went unnoticed, and then was copied into other trees.
  • Many other online trees list his place of death as "Biyang, Yixian, Anhui, China". I (Paige Kolze) have contacted every tree owner with this information and have not found the source. The people who replied all said they copied it from somewhere else.
  • Since these two unlikely places of death are completely unsourced, I am currently using Leyden Township in his profile since it has at least a secondary source. It also seems that if he had really died in somewhere exotic his family would still remember 28 years or so later when they gave the information for the county history book.
  • Further research is needed to resolve this and hopefully find a better source
